Review For Electrick Children

Though unevenly told and at times too fanciful for its own good, "Electrick Children" marks an intriguing feature debut for its risk-taking writer-director, Rebecca Thomas.
Gary Goldstein-Los Angeles Times

"Electrick Children" is well acted and refreshingly nonjudgmental, but its narrative continuity is tenuous at best.
Stephen Holden-New York Times

Thomas makes an assured debut as both writer and director, the gifted Culkin is excellent as always, and Garner finds lovely shades of nuance in Rachel's innocent faith.
Elizabeth Weitzman-New York Daily News

Thomas has an aversion to the easy resolution-she knows precisely which mysteries to keep dangling.
Ted Scheinman-Village Voice

The best moments in filmmaker Rebecca Thomas's debut feature manage flashes of wide-eyed grace-that is, when the overly precious, half-formed story isn't undermining her understated direction and the work of a fine cast.
Keith Phipps-Time Out New York

You needn't be a true believer to appreciate Rebecca Thomas's indie feature rooted in a traditional Mormon community.
Justin Lowe-Hollywood Reporter

Good as it is, with a catchy high concept and hip indie sensibility, it could have been so much better. Culkin, Aiken and Garner, however, can count the film as an unmitigated triumph.
Jessica Kiang-The Playlist

Rebecca Thomas's debut feature is a sensible and humane exploration of youthful curiosity.
Chuck Bowen-Slant Magazine

Sweet but never sickly ... Electrick Children is real must-see from a bright new talent.
Catherine Bray-Film4

The film ultimately exposes itself as fluffy fantasy.
Aaron Yap-Flicks.co.nz

The debut feature of twentysomething Rebecca Thomas, who herself grew up in the Mormon faith, this US indie is a decent coming-of-age yarn, adorned with some magic realist flourishes.
Tom Dawson-The List

Writer-director Rebecca Thomas invites us into this world with a gentle, unhectoring hand, and keeps the mystery of her story wide open.
Tim Robey-Daily Telegraph

Rebecca Thomas's gauzy debut about a 15-year-old Mormon who believes she's had an immaculate conception is deftly done.
Catherine Shoard-Guardian [UK]

After the interesting initial concept, Electrick Children falls apart structurally, most notably in its transition between the second and third act.
Joe Walsh-Little White Lies

An interesting and catchy take on a traditional tale of repressed teenage rebellion.
Limara Salt-Empire Magazine

The performances are excellent, and the filmmaking is mesmerising.
Rich Cline-Shadows on the Wall

Careful, kids - rock'n'roll can get you pregnant. Or that's what one Mormon teen believes in this cute lo-fi indie from first-timer Rebecca Thomas.
Paul M. Bradshaw-Total Film

There's a solid core to this magical realist coming of age tale that smooths over the odd bump.
Lee Marshall-Screen International

"Electrick Children" exudes raw talent and heralds the arrival of a voice that could evolve into something truly special, even if it's currently a little unsure of what exactly it wants to say.
Todd Gilchrist-In Contention

Review For Antiviral

How sick can fans of a celebrity get? Very, answers "Antiviral." Imagine fan fetish culture metastasizing. A pox on consumers and capitalists alike, Brandon Cronenberg sneers.
Bill Stamets-Chicago Sun-Times

If Cronenberg's not yet a dead ringer for his iconic dad, he's taken an intriguing first step.
Gary Goldstein-Los Angeles Times

The pace is uneven, the energy sluggish (even the arrival of Malcolm McDowell in the third act doesn't pep things up) and the film feels overlong.
Moira MacDonald-Seattle Times

What Jones hasn't been given is a character to play. Syd is a cipher, neither sympathetic nor hateful, nor even interestingly human.
Farran Smith Nehme-New York Post

Eventually the clammy spell of this handsomely designed but solemnly paced movie begins to wear off, and you long for a little action or at least some fresh air.
Stephen Holden-New York Times

Before long, the aggressive sleekness of Antiviral becomes its own kind of ennui.
Stephanie Zacharek-NPR

The script is thin but effectively creepy as it examines contemporary pop culture obsessions while maximizing the queasy close-ups of needles, blood and medical procedures.
Todd Jorgenson-Cinemalogue.com

Our Lindsay Lohan-obsessed culture gets its comeuppance in this surgically precise satire.
Christian Toto-Big Hollywood

As pretentious as it is boring.
Jim Schembri-3AW

Brandon (son of David) Cronenberg demonstrates that the diseased tumor doesn't fall far from the infected corpse, so to speak: He's delivered a movie of smart, satirical science-fiction concepts and disturbing, sometimes bloody images.
John Beifuss-Commercial Appeal (Memphis, TN)

A gutsy, notable debut for a young filmmaker who needs to find a unique voice to match his unique ideas.
Mark Keizer-Alt Film Guide

The metaphors are maybe too clear (there's a food product grown from celebrity muscle cells), but the filmmaking is solid, using a nearly monochrome palette for its sleek dystopia.
Marc Mohan-Oregonian

Originality is a rare commodity in art, so when something fresh and unexpected comes my way, it's cause for celebration. Brandon Cronenberg's Antiviral is cause for celebration.
Beth Accomando-KPBS.org

Cronenberg Jnr has created a reality that makes the skin crawl. Satire, horror and sci-fi meld into one delectably gruesome tale in which Caleb Landry Jones' pasty protagonist spends most of the film clutching a thermometer, syringe and a vial of blood
Louise Keller-Urban Cinefile

Cronenberg Jnr has created a reality that makes the skin crawl. Satire, horror and sci-fi meld into one delectably gruesome tale in which Caleb Landry Jones' pasty protagonist spends most of the film clutching a thermometer, syringe and a vial of blood
Urban Cinefile Critics-Urban Cinefile

While Brandon Cronenberg surely lives up to the family name, I can't prescribe Antiviral to anyone needing an exciting sci-fi fix.
Matt Donato-We Got This Covered

Undoubtedly a challenging watch, but it's helped greatly by beautiful cinematography and music.
Matt Glasby-Flicks.co.nz

If weirdness was all that mattered, Antiviral would be a must-see.
Matt Pais-RedEye

As a piss-take of society's shallow fascination with Kardashian-like nobodies, Antiviral is coolly effective, but there's little insight into the psychology that drives normal people to fixate on such 'celebrities'.
Simon Foster-sbs.com.au

Sick, stomach-churning, satirical sci-fi - and the many distastefully visceral syringe scenes are not for the squeamish.
Susan Granger-SSG Syndicate

A slick, vapid thriller. Cronenberg has style and flair, but his all-too-obvious ideas about fame leave us with caricatures, not characters.
Caryn James-James on screenS

"Antiviral" is interesting for the first ten or fifteen minutes before it digresses into a slough. Boredom is the death of any movie, and this one will bore you to tears.
Cole Smithey-ColeSmithey.com

Brandon Cronenberg makes a striking debut for his first feature, following on the heels of his famous father while blazing his own career trail.

Review For The Revisionaries

Really a well-made dispatch from a long war.
Daniel M. Gold-New York Times

Thurman presents a largely even-handed recounting, wisely letting folks - and events - speak for themselves.
Gary Goldstein-Los Angeles Times

Of all the scary movies you may see this month, none will be more chilling than Scott Thurman's documentary about the Texas State Board of Education.
Elizabeth Weitzman-New York Daily News

An alarming, hilarious documentary ...
Andrew O'Hehir-Salon.com

Such a feature-length bludgeoning, even in the service of basic social and scientific literacy, is truly discomfiting.
Keith Uhlich-Time Out New York

Offers a balanced view of the fight over science and U.S. history standards for Texas schools, but lacks the punch it might have achieved with a stronger point of view.
Chris Vognar-Dallas Morning News

Due to redistricting, every position on the Texas State Board of Education is up for election on the November 2012 ballot. See The Revisionaries and become better informed about the subject, and then remember to cast your vote.
Marjorie Baumgarten-Austin Chronicle

Scott Thurman captures not only the fear and anti-intellectual resentment and insecurity that govern the dictations of the far right, but also the rampant unchecked egotism.
Chuck Bowen-Slant Magazine

At once an unsettling documentary and an enlightening one.
Frank Swietek-One Guy's Opinion

This frontline skirmish in the culture wars [over school textbooks] is the subject of Scott Thurman's engrossing documentary ... It's a symbolic fight of our times, making [the film] a compelling and involving work.
Cary Darling-Fort Worth Star-Telegram/DFW.com

This doc's look at the avid Texas State Board of Education (led by a smalltown dentist), invested in rewriting school textbooks in order to push ultra-right wing agendas, is a disturbing must-see.
Kimberly Gadette-Doddle

Review For The Place Beyond The Pines

This naturalistic drama is ambitious to the point of being unwieldy... But once the story has advanced from one generation to the next and its thematic sweep has become apparent, these flaws seem much more tolerable.
J. R. Jones-Chicago Reader

"Pines" is hardy stuff, but it's at its toughest when Gosling's on screen.
Tom Long-Detroit News

The Place Beyond the Pines is hackneyed and dull: Not a single moment rings true.
Rene Rodriguez-Miami Herald

This is a story about legacy, the sins of the father, the restlessness in our souls. It's powerful, it's bold, it hits you hard.
Steven Rea-Philadelphia Inquirer

Cianfrance and his sterling cast keep it all together, vanquishing doubt and soap suds. There's a palpable sense of teamwork that brings out the best in all of these players.
Peter Howell-Toronto Star

Its three stories are so loosely connected, its themes so scattered -- morality, justice, fate, fatherhood -- that it never manages to make a point.
Rafer Guzman-Newsday

The movie is constructed like a three-act saga, with only the third part failing to satisfy.
Matt Brunson-Creative Loafing

Terrifically captivating, whether delivering breathless action, knuckle-whitening suspense or moments of quiet intimacy.
Jason Best-Movie Talk

Derek Cianfrance's The Place Beyond the Pines is an epic film that towers high above the rest as the very best film of 2013.
Jeremy Lebens-We Got This Covered

Writer-director Derek Cianfrance gained considerable attention for his 2010 drama Blue Valentine, and he has created an even finer movie with The Place Beyond the Pines.
Forrest Hartman-Reno Gazette-Journal

"The Place Beyond the Pines" is a great example of daring storytelling and easily qualifies as one of the year's best.
Jeff Beck-Examiner.com

Bites off a little more than it can chew in that respect, but it's still a deeply affecting drama with a powerful impact.
Eric D. Snider-About.com

With The Place Beyond the Pines, Derek Cianfrance definitively establishes himself as an up-and-coming filmmaker with serious potential...
David Nusair-Reel Film Reviews

Stretches the scope of the film well beyond crime thriller.
Frances Morton-Flicks.co.nz

An ambitious and thought-provoking film with a beautiful score and some of the biggest narrative twists of the year.
John Hanlon-Big Hollywood

Motivation is the weak link here, with characters major and minor making choices that don't compute and/or serve mainly to advance the narrative down the next twist of track toward the tragedy looming on the horizon.
Nicolas Rapold-Film Comment Magazine

While it feels frustratingly disjointed, The Place Beyond The Pines also possesses moments of real power.
Martin Roberts-Fan The Fire

By linking [three vignettes], Cianfrance explores larger themes that enrich the otherwise patience-testing 140-minute experience.
John Serba-MLive.com

A memorable, thoughtful tale; a thriller with real meat on the bone.
Simon Miraudo-Quickflix

Would Pines have worked better as a 13-episode cable drama? Probably. Yet its atmosphere comes through beautifully on the big screen.
Margot Harrison-Seven Days

Cianfrance uses the film's gritty visuals to enhance the character's experiences, starting with a vibe reminiscent of a 90's thrash metal video clip, then moving into police footage territory before ultimately setting a wistful tone for the third act.
David 'Mad Dog' Bradley-Rip It Up

The film is unfortunately front-loaded with more art movie cliches than you can count, but once they get out the way the trans-generational story does close its grip on you.
Jim Schembri-3AW

"Place Beyond the Pines" will not lift spirits. Yet there are hints of hope attached to the film's view that change is possible -- if people can just get out of their own way.
Carla Meyer-Sacramento Bee

A huge leap forward for Cianfrance, who is rapidly distinguishing himself as a true auteur.
Al Alexander-The Patriot Ledger

Bleak, raw, epic and vibrating with energy, Pines is a film to haunt your dreams, and, so far, the best thing I've seen in a cinema in 2013.
Adam Ross-The Aristocrat

While it is still a rewarding film on face value, The Place Beyond the Pines offers additional pleasures for viewers keen to delve further.
Thomas Caldwell-Cinema Autopsy

Review For Skyfall

It's been a long time since I enjoyed a Bond movie so much.
Tom Charity-CNN.com

'Quantum of Solace,' was a dour, dire letdown. This picture's a substantial bounce back, and easily the best Craig Bond picture. Emotional depth and all.
Glenn Kenny-MSN Movies

Sam Mendes' 'Skyfall': sleek, slithery, sensual
Joe Baltake-Passionate Moviegoer

The cool accomplishment of Skyfall, 23rd in the Broccoli franchise, is that it seems a necessary, rather than mandatory, addition to the year's popular culture.
Richard Corliss-TIME Magazine

Among the most ambitious imaginings of Bond to date: dark, supple, and punctuated with moments of unanticipated visual brilliance.
Christopher Orr-The Atlantic

Mendes' approach to action is classical and elegant - no manic editing and blurry unintelligible images here - but what makes the movie special is the attention he pays his actors.
Rene Rodriguez-Miami Herald

It's not just a terrific Bond movie; it's a terrific movie, period.
Eric D. Snider-EricDSnider.com

It is not the breath of fresh air that was 2006's "Casino Royale," but it is nearly as satisfying.
Carla Meyer-Sacramento Bee

Mendes has embraced the general super-ness of Bond and taken his inspiration from the best superhero flick of recent years: The Dark Knight.
Margot Harrison-Seven Days

For 50 years, we've placed our stock in Bonds, but never have our investments yielded the sort of windfall 'Skyfall' delivers over two-and-a-half hours of pulsating entertainment that will leave you shaken - and stirred.
Al Alexander-The Patriot Ledger

One of the better bonds, but it isn't as good as Daniel Craig's first outing.
Wesley Lovell-Cinema Sight

Solicits swoons like the best Bonds ever did, even if Bond's dangerously close to decommission.
Sara Maria Vizcarrondo-Movies With Butter

A very British Bond, and also a very personal one.
Tom Glasson-Concrete Playground

It ought to win a prize just for reconnecting with what made the franchise successful in the first place, while also repositioning the Bond films for the '10s.
James Plath-Movie Metropolis

Sam Mendes revitalizes the James Bond franchise with a slick and action-packed entry. Daniel Craig proves yet again why he's the best Bond yet.
Jeremy Lebens-We Got This Covered

Bond traditions haven't just been updated -- they've been intelligently modified and rethought, giving us the franchise's inherent pleasures in a new package.
Tim Grierson-Deadspin

Skyfall proves that a long-standing series can deliver the expected fundamentals while keeping the new films fresh and unpredictable.
Mark Pfeiffer-Reel Times: Reflections on Cinema

One of the ten best films of 2012.
Fr. Chris Carpenter-Rage Monthly

The film serves as a trip back to the beginning of the 50-year-old cinematic legend and the promise of a golden future with Craig in the role of 007.
Matthew Odam-Austin American-Statesman

What propels this grisly chapter is the characters' keen sense of agency.
Rob Humanick-Projection Booth

Skyfall epitomizes what a Bond movie should be, and its director, for once, justifiably deserves much of the credit.
Gabe Leibowitz-Film and Felt

Skyfall isn't quite a throwback to the absurd thrills of the 007 films of old, but it does inject some fun back into the franchise.
Rob Gonsalves-eFilmCritic.com

As the saying goes, you've got to shake 22 Bond films, before the 23rd is stirred to perfection. Without a doubt, this is the best James Bond movie.
Jeff Bayer-The Scorecard Review

James Bond looks broken and weary, an embodiment of a traditional model of international spydom, the one premised on national borders, white-Western-wealthy entitlements, and excessive consumptions of alcohol, cars, and women.
Cynthia Fuchs-PopMatters

I have no compulsion whatsoever in declaring Skyfall, in terms of cinematography, the best looking Bond film ever ... Action movies simply don't look like this - but ... this is no ordinary action movie.
CJ Johnson-ABC Radio (Australia)
